There are no contemporary sources that indicate that Jesus ever existed. Atheists must learn that it makes no sense to debate what Jesus said or didn't say, or what he did or didn't, as long as we don't even know whether this mythical creature ever existed. This non-existence includes the version proposed by some "light-weight" Christians arguing that Jesus may not have been a demigod, but certainly some great philosopher that we should follow.
However, much of it is also a moot point, because Christianity didn't really begin until Paul decided that it was all a question of faith. It was in Paul's letters that the notion of some Jesus that had died for our sins was conceived.
The bottom line is that it was a known human being, not some god or demigod, who defined the faith.
